Ursuline College PE Department 

We aim to inspire students to take part in a physical education programme that emphasises enjoyable participation. The mission of the Ursuline College Catholic Academy’s Physical Education Department is to promote a positive attitude towards lifelong physical activity and fitness through the delivery of high quality PE lessons that help educate minds and develop healthy bodies.

 

In Key Stage 3 students will develop their knowledge and understanding in a range of individual and team sports . These will include Dodgeball, football, netball, sports hall athletics, handball, indoor rowing, rugby, badminton, fitness, basketball, team building, athletics, climbing, striking and fielding (rounders, cricket, softball, stoolball), volleyball, orienteering. The students will be taught the skills, techniques, tactics, rules and variety of observation and analysis methods to help improve performance. 

Students will also have the opportunity to join and take part in a variety of extra-curricular activities and represent the college at a number of inter school competitions.

What does the qualification cover?  

This course provides an engaging and relevant introduction to the world of sport. It incorporates important aspects of the industry, such as fitness testing and training for sport and exercise, the psychology of sport, practical sports performance and sports leadership. It enables you to develop and apply your knowledge, while also developing a range of relevant practical, communication and technical skills. The qualification is 120 GLH, which is the same size and level as a GCSE, is aimed at everyone who wants to find out more about the sport industry. You will study three mandatory units, covering the underpinning knowledge and skills required for the sports sector:  

 

Unit 1 - Fitness for sport and exercise  

Unit 2 - Practical performance in sport  

Unit 3 - Applying the principles of personal training.  

You will build on the knowledge gained in the mandatory units by choosing one further unit:  

Unit 5 - The sports performer in action 

 

How will I be assessed?  

You will carry out tasks/assignments throughout the course. Your teacher will mark these, and so you will receive feedback as to how you are getting on. For the assessment for Unit 3 Applying the Principles of Personal Training, you will be able to draw on the knowledge, skills and understanding you have developed in the qualification as a whole. The assessment for Unit 1: Fitness for Sport and Exercise is an onscreen test which is marked by Pearson.

Where will this take me?  

If you are interested in taking your study of sport further, the subject-specific knowledge and skills outlined above, and developed through studying this qualification, will give you a strong foundation for academic or vocational study at level 3, including apprenticeships.  

What other subjects go well with sport?  

 

This qualification is designed to be taken as part of a broad and balanced curriculum at Key Stage 4. It will go particularly well alongside GCSEs in EBacc subjects (including biology), GCSEs in creative subjects (such as drama, music and art) and/or other Technical Awards (e.g. BTEC Health and Social Care, BTEC Business or Tech Award DIT) to provide both curriculum breadth and the skills you need to make informed choices about study post-16.

What could this qualification lead to?  

The qualification carries UCAS points and is recognised by higher education providers as contributing to meeting admission requirements for many courses if taken alongside other qualifications as part of a two-year programme of study. It combines well with a large number of subjects and supports entry to higher education courses in a very wide range of disciplines (depending on the subjects taken alongside). For learners who wish to study an aspect of sport in higher education, opportunities include:  

 

• BA (Hons) in Sport Studies and Business, if taken alongside A Levels in Business and Maths  

• BSC (Hons) in Sport Psychology, if taken alongside a BTEC National Extended Certificate in Applied Science and A Level in Psychology  

• BA (Hons) in Sports Education and Special and Inclusive Education, if taken alongside an A Level in English Language and a BTEC National Extended Certificate in Performing Arts  

• BA (Hons) in Sport and Exercise Science, if taken alongside a BTEC National Diploma in Applied Science. 

 

What does this qualification cover?  

The content of this qualification has been developed in consultation with academics to ensure that it supports progression to higher education. Employers and professional bodies have also been involved and consulted to confirm that the content is appropriate and consistent with current practice for learners who may choose to enter employment directly in the sport sector. Learners will study three mandatory units:

• Unit 2: Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well-being – External Exam 

• Unit 3: Professional Development in the Sports Industry.

Learners who have completed this qualification in two years may progress to further learning at Level 3 with additional Level 3 qualifications.
