Course Overview

This subject is taught to all students who have not already achieved a grade C/grade 4 in Maths for their GCSE examinations.

The pupils are usually broken into 2 groups that are of mixed ability and the group they are in is dependent on their other timetabled classes.

All pupils are taught through grades 1-9 so that it matches with the current GCSE criteria and these individual grades are broken into different subject areas, these are:

  • Number
  • Ratio and Proportion
  • Geometry
  • Algebra
  • Statistics and Probability

The pupils are mostly taught through working on examination questions so that they are consistently working towards the next GCSE examination.

For this Mathematics qualification the pupils will be assessed entirely via 3 separate examination papers that are all of equal weighting (33.3% each, Duration 1h 30 mins, 1 x Non Calculator & 2 x Calculator papers).

These examination papers have the following possible entry tiers:

  • Foundation Tier (Grade 1 – 5, grade 1 the lowest)
  • Higher Tier (Grade 4 – 9, grade 9 the highest)

These examination papers can assess any area of Mathematics in any of the three papers within the specification of the qualification; there is no particular set pattern.
