Course Overview

Paper 1: Fiction and Imaginative Writing- The component requires students to study a range of prose fiction, developing skills to analyse and evaluate 19th-century fiction extracts. The writing content of this component requires students to develop imaginative writing skills to engage the reader and to use spelling punctuation and grammar accurately. This component is externally assessed in a 1 hour 45 minute examination. The component is worth 40% of the final award for English Language.

Paper 2: Non-Fiction and Transactional Writing- The component requires students to study a range of 20th- and 21st- century non-fiction texts, developing skills to analyse, evaluate and compare non-fiction extracts. The transactional writing component requires students to demonstrate their ability to write in a variety of forms, purposes and audiences whilst using spelling, punctuation and grammar accurately. This component is externally assessed through a 2 hour examination. This unit is worth 60% of the final award for English Language.

Assessment of Spoken Language – As this is a resit, providing students have not got an ‘unclassified’ grade from the Year 11 entry, students do not need to resit this unit. All Speaking and Listening components, from any exam board, will count towards their overall award in the resit.
