Content relating to the subject qualification | Learners will study three mandatory units: Unit 1: Principles and Applications of Science 1 - Understand key science concepts in biology, chemistry and physics Unit 2: Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques - Carry out quantitative laboratory techniques, calibration, chromatography, calorimetry and laboratory safety, which are relevant to the chemical and life science industries. Unit 3: Science Investigation Skills - Explain the stages involved and the skills needed in planning a scientific investigation: how to record, interpret, draw scientific conclusions and evaluate Plus one optional unit: Unit 8: Physiology of Human Body Systems - focus on the physiological make up of three human body systems (musculoskeletal, lymphatic and digestive systems), how the systems function and what occurs during dysfunction.

Assessment of the qualification | External assessment on Unit 1 - 90 marks - Written exam - 2 hours
External assessment on Unit 3 - 60 marks - Scenario and practical investigation in Part A is given to students 8 days before Part B is scheduled and undertaken in a single session of 3 hours. Part B is a set task in a single session of 1.5 hours taken on the ninth day.
Internal assessment on Unit 2 plus optional unit - assignment consisting of research, case studies, projects and practical skills.
