BTEC Level 2 First Award in Children’s Learning, Play and Development (GCSE Equivalent) and a good introduction to the Level 3.

Entry Criteria

Three GCSEs at grade 9-3 including preferably GCSE English grade 4 or above or Level 2 in Health and Social Care at a level two pass or above

Course Overview




A 1 year course where Students will develop a broad and comprehensive understanding of the early year’s sector, taking into account the recent Nutbrown review (2012) and its recommendations.


Students will develop an understanding of professional and personal skills required to work in the early year’s sector.


Students will learn about the development of a child from birth to seven years of age, the importance of play as a route for learning and the key principles that underline early years practice, such as empowering children and the key person.


This will allow them to progress to a more specialised level 3 course vocational or academic course in early years, health and social care or psychology.


The assessment units are:

Unit 1 Patterns of Child Development

External assessment 1 hour exam, 50 marks made up of multiple choice questions, short scenario questions and an extended writing question.

Unit 2 Promoting Children’s Development through Play
