Content relating to the subject qualification

Students will be introduced to a variety of experiences that explore a range of photographic media, techniques and processes. They will be made aware of both traditional and new technologies. The course is focused upon delivering a broad study of skills and techniques alongside developing the students’ understanding and specialist knowledge of Photography.

 

Such areas of focus include developing their understanding of visual language, considering intended audiences; the ability to respond to an issue, theme, concept or idea, or work to a brief or answer a need in Photography; appreciation of viewpoint, composition, aperture, depth of field, shutter speed and movement

 

Students will be encouraged to creatively explore themes with relevant images, artefacts and resources relating to a range of art, craft and design, from the past and from recent times, including European and non-European examples as part of their coursework and exam units. Such themes explored in Photography include Portraiture, Still life, Landscape, Photojournalism/ documentary, Experimental imagery to name a few examples.

Researching and exploring themes are an integral part of the investigating and making processes. Students' responses to these examples must be shown through practical and critical activities that demonstrate their understanding of different styles, genres and traditions. Students will create a portfolio of work that is supported by the use of sketchbooks/workbooks/journals to underpin their work where appropriate. They will also be encouraged to develop their drawing skills in order to produce storyboards, thumbnail sketches and/or diagrams, where appropriate.

 

Assessment of the qualification

Students will be assessed regularly and at the end of each component using the four assessment objectives specified by AQA. Their final contributions from the exam and coursework will be moderated and marked by an external examiner at the end of the exam period.

 

AS-Level Component 1 (coursework): 60% overall grade

AS-Level Component 2 (Exam): 40% overall grade

 

A-Level Component 1 (Personal Investigation): 60% overall grade

A-Level Component 2 (Exam): 40% overall grade

There are many incredible and exciting careers within the arts to pursue, such as:

Fine art, graphic design, fashion, textile art, sculpture, illustration, photography, art history, art therapy, teaching, architecture, animation,  film/TV/theatre design - set design/ costume / prop design / makeup.

Extra-Curricular

Students are encouraged to attend compulsory sessions to complete and improve coursework on a weekly basis. This is a great opportunity for students to experiment with equipment and materials not accessible outside of school and to have more 1:1 tutorials.

 

Students will have the opportunity to go on trips to local art museums and galleries, whilst also having specialists in for workshops to help build their skill set.
