4 GCSE’s  at 9 –4 grade including  English and Mathematics (due to 50% coursework, 25% written examination and 25% Finance examination)

Content relating to the subject qualification

A two year course which includes the completion of 4 units:

Mandatory Units – 3 units

  • Unit One - Exploring Business
    • Learners will study the purposes of different businesses, their structures and the effects that the external environment will have on them and how they need to be innovative in order to survive.

 

  • Unit Two – Developing a Marketing Campaign
    • Learners will gain understanding and the skills that are required in how to fully develop a marketing campaign.

 

  • Unit Three - Personal and Business Finance
    • Learners will study the purpose and importance of both personal finance and business finance. They will develop the skills required to prepare and analyse financial and accounting information.

 

Optional Unit - 1 unit taken from the choice of:

  • Recruitment and Selection Process
  • Investigating Customer Service
  • Market Research
  • The English Legal System
  • Work Experience in Business

 

Assessment of the qualification

Unit One – Set and assessed internally by means of student produced, portfolio of work.

Unit Two – Assessed by means of student produced portfolio task that is externally set and assessed by Pearson, in exam controlled conditions.

Unit Three - Assessed by a written, 2-hour Finance examination that is externally set and assessed by Pearson.

Optional Unit - Set and assessed internally by means of student produced, Portfolio of work.

All units are weighted equally and carry 25% each.

Career Pathways

The course is designed to provide clear progression pathways into further study at university level or employment on a range of courses and careers. Students can be confident this course is fitting for their progression plans, as it will provide them with the knowledge needed to succeed.

Business offers students the opportunity to study different types of businesses in different industries. It looks at why they exist, how they are set up and how they are run.  Everyone works in an organisation which is a business of some sort – so studying business is useful as you develop skills that are found in most jobs. Business studies will give you the skills of coming up with business ideas, using maths skills to analyse data, making decisions and developing your communication skills through presentations and reports - all highly transferable skills. 

Business studies can lead into a wide range of careers such as marketing, HR, finance and law. Studied alongside maths/finance it can open doors into careers related to finance or running your own business.

 

Extra-Curricular

Students will partake in a number of extra-curricular enrichment activities which are designed to complement and put into context the information covered on the course.  This will be achieved by means of a mixture of pre-arranged visits from local Business people, and also through excursions to local areas of commercial interest.
