Course Overview




An internationally recognised English Language focused course for students who have not yet attained a C at GCSE level in English. It serves to develop student’s skills in speaking and listening, reading and writing, aiming to develop the ability to communicate clearly, accurately and effectively.

Written assignments and examinations are aimed to develop a wider range of vocabulary as well as accuracy in grammar, spelling and punctuation. Tasks help support students to develop a personal style and an awareness of the audience being addressed. It also serves to develop analytical and communication skills such as synthesis, inference, and the ability to order facts and present opinions effectively.


This component is eligible for grades A–E. Learning is assessed through terminal examination and coursework.

Terminal Examination – 40%

Paper 2 – Reading 2 hours (50 marks). Candidates answer three questions on two passages.

Coursework Portfolio – 40%

 Component 4 (50 marks) Candidates submit three assignments, each of 500–800 words. This component is assessed by the teacher and moderated by Cambridge.

Speaking and Listening Test – 20 %

Component 5 (30 marks) Candidates conduct an individual task and take part in a discussion, lasting 10 – 12 minutes in total. All candidates are recorded during the administration period. This component is assessed by the teacher and moderated by Cambridge.
