Biology (A Level)

Entry Requirements

5 GCSE’s including English and Math, including a grade C in Additional or Further Additional Biology GCSE.  

Course Content

Year 1   

Biological molecules, cell structure & division, Immune System, Exchange and transport systems, DNA, RNA and protein synthesis and Diversity and Selection.  There are also Mathematical components to study and the use of Statistics and 6 Practical assessments. 

 Year 2  

Photosynthesis & Respiration, Energy transfer and Nutrient cycles, Nervous system, Homeostasis, Genetics and Gene technology and populations in Ecosystems and evolution. There are also Mathematical components to study and the use of Statistics and 6 more practical assessments.

Assessment

AS (year 1 only qualification)   

2 Written exams both 1 hour 30 mins.  75 marks each worth 50% of the AS exam.  

 A level ( Year 1 & 2 examined at the end of the second year) 

 Paper 1  

(2 hours) assess AS content. 91 marks (35% of A level) 

Paper 2  

(2 hours) assess A2 content  91 marks ( 35% of A level) 

Paper 3  

(2hours) any content + Essay question 78 Marks ( 30% ) 

 All papers will examine practical skills
