BTEC Sport

Content Overview

Through a combination of practical experience and written assignments, these vocational qualifications provide level 2 learners with the knowledge, skills and understanding needed for a career in the sector.

Units offered

Unit 1: Fitness for Sport and Exercise (External)

Unit 2: Practical sports Performance (Internal)

Unit 4: The Sports Performer in Action (Internal)

Unit 5: Training for Personal Fitness (Internal)

These units are graded at Level 2 Pass (C), Level 2 Merit (B), Level 2 Distinction (A), Level 2 Distinction* (A*), Level 1 (D) and Unclassified (U)

Assessment

External Assessment

External assessed units have the same grades as internally assessed units:

  • Level 2 – Pass, Merit, Distinction
  • Level 1
  • Unclassified

Unit 1: Fitness for Sport and Exercise (25%)

This unit is externally assessed using an onscreen test – Edexcel sets and marks the test. The assessment must be taken by the learner under examination conditions.

The external assessment will be 1 hour and is marked out of 50. The exam unit will be completed by the end of year 10 - Internal Assessment

Unit 2: Practical Sports Performance (25%)

In this unit students will:

  • Understand the rules, regulations and scoring systems for selected sports
  • Practically demonstrate skills, techniques and tactics in selected sports
  • Be able to review sports performance.

Unit 4: The Sports Performer in Action (25%)

In this units students will:

  • Know about the short-term responses and long-term adaptations o f the body system to exercise
  • Know about the different energy systems used during sports performance

Unit 5: Training for Personal Fitness (25%)

In this unit students will:

  • Design a personal fitness training programme
  • Know about exercise adherence factors and strategies for continued training success.
  • Implement a self-designed personal fitness training programme to achieve own goals and objectives.
  • Review a personal fitness training programme.

75% of the course is internally assessed and moderated by edexcel through the production of coursework assignments.

25% of the course is externally assessed through an online exam set and marked by Edexcel.

Two units are delivered and assessed in year 10 with the remaining units delivered and assessed in year 11.

Extra-Curricular Activities

A range of extra-curricular clubs will be on offer linked to local fixtures; these include Football, Netball, Cricket, Athletics, Rounders, Volleyball, Softball, Table Tennis and Tennis.

Students will also have the opportunity to take part in a ran ge of leadership opportunities.
