Course Overview

English Language - Edexcel – Skills are developed over both Year 10 and 11

 

Component 1: Fiction and Imaginative Writing 40%

Students study a range of 19th century fiction extracts, developing skills in analysing the effects of language and structure.

Students develop creativity in their writing and the ability to use a range of techniques effectively to create character and settings.

 

Component 2: Non-fiction and transactional writing 60%

Students study a range of 20th century, non- fiction extracts, developing skills in analysing the effects of language and structure.

Students develop skills in writing a variety of non- fiction texts for different purposes and audiences.

 

 Spoken Language (Edexcel) (non-examination) (Year 10)

 Students develop skills in presenting;  responding to questions and feedback; using  standard English

 

English Literature – AQA

 

Component 1: Shakespeare (Year 10) and 19th Century Novel (Year 11)

Section A: Shakespeare Play – Much Ado About Nothing

Section B: 19th Century Novel—Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde

 

Component 2: Modern Texts (Year 10)  and Poetry (Year 10/11)

Section A: Lord of the Flies

Section B: Power and conflict Poetry

Section C: Unseen Poetry

Assessment

Both English Language and English Literature are 100% examination

 

Component 1: Fiction and Imaginative Writing 40%

Examination: 1 hour 45 minutes

Section A: Reading unseen 19th century fiction extract; answering short and extended questions (15%).

Section B:  Imaginative Writing task (25%)

 

Component 2: Non-fiction and transactional writing 60%

Examination: 2 hours

Section A: Reading unseen non-fiction extracts from 20th and 21st centuries answering short and extended questions (35%)

Section B: Transactional Writing - (e.g. letter, diary, newspaper/magazine article etc.) 25%)
