The Design Technology and Engineering curriculum aims to ensure that pupils develop creative and practical skills whilst furthering their understanding of the design process and technological development. This will ultimately help them to become designers, creators and discerning consumers who can embrace an entrepreneurial spirit.  Through the iterative nature of the design process, that of regular evaluation and refinement of their own work, pupils are encouraged to become resilient and reflective designers / learners who strive for good quality outcomes. 

Key Stage 3 

By the end of Key Stage 3, pupils have studied the iterative design process which involves:

Future Careers:  The skills developed in Engineering are applicable to a wide range of engineering careers including mechanical engineer, materials engineer, electrical engineer, electronics engineer, petroleum engineer, chemical (process) engineer or biomedical engineer. The course also lends itself to progression into the trades or careers such as architecture and product design. 

By the end of Key Stage 4, pupils have studied 4 units: 

  • R105 Design briefs, design specifications and user requirements - an externally examined unit that covers everything from materials, tools, manufacturing techniques and technologies, the design process and sustainability of products. There are practical elements as pupils learn about different manufacturing techniques. 

  • R106 Product analysis and research – a coursework unit in which products are disassembled and analysed. 

  • R107 Developing and presenting engineering designs – a coursework unit in which pupils learn to take an idea from conception to the presentation stage, ultimately presenting their idea using computer aided design. 

  • R108 3D Design Realisation - a practical coursework unit in which the manufacture of a product is planned and undertaken. 

 

They can: 

  • Explain the design cycle and the relationship between design briefs and specifications 

  • Understand the requirements of a design specification for the development of a new product 

  • Explain wider influences on the design of new products 

  • Understand commercial production methods 

  • Conduct in depth research into existing products 

  • Analyse existing products through disassembly 

  • Generate design proposals using a range of techniques 

  • Develop designs using engineering drawing techniques and annotation 

  • Use Computer Aided Design to communicate design proposals 

  • Know how to plan the making of a prototype 

  • Understand safe working practices 

  • Produce an accurate prototype
